Jazz-Age Lawn Party

Governors Island NYC
Saturday and Sunday, September 13th and 14th, 2008

After the most well-attended Jazz Age Lawn Party to date last June, The Jazz-Age Lawn Party returns to enchanting Governors Island to greet the coming of Autumn. Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra will perform on this hidden gem just off the southeastern tip of Manhattan, nestled in the heart of majestic New York Harbor. Under a shady grove of centuries-old trees, caressed by fresh sea air, a sprawling green surrounded by historic officers’ quarters and 18th century naval ramparts becomes the setting for a true Gatsby affair. Widely anticipated by flappers, sporting gents and tiny tots alike, this event has been featured annually by The New York Times. In addition to Michael Arenella’s 12-piece Dreamland Orchestra which plays both days, the acclaimed Boilermaker Jazz Band will be joining on Sunday the 14th. See dreamlandorchestra.com for more details.

Lincoln Center Out of Doors
Damrosch Park Bandshell Band: Simone with The Rob Stoneback Big Band with special guest Bob Belden
Sunday August 10, 2008 7:00 PM

Simone with The Rob Stoneback Big Band perform this Sunday at the Damrosch Park Bandshell in Lincoln Center. The daughter of the legendary musical icon Nina Simone, Simone is her own woman, a singer, songwriter and performer whose ability to transcend genres echoes the tradition of her mother. Blessed with a rich vocal range, an innate skill for lyrical interpretation and a soul-deep understanding of music as a means of healing, empowerment and celebration, Simone is very much her mother’s daughter, but she is most assuredly a multi-talented artist in her own right. With a fantastic career as a Broadway star (Aida, Rent, The Lion King) under her belt, she has now embarked on a solo singing career with a big band tribute to her mom on the CD Simone on Simone. Simone will backed by the Rob Stoneback Big Band, with charts based on her mother’s original arrangements. http://www.lincolncenter.org

Note on Mary Stallings: For the nationwide Lindy Hop community this is going to be one highly anticipated musical line up. After all, Mary Stallings’ recording of “Surrey with the Fringe On Top” was an instant hit with the dancers when it was first released over 10 years ago. And most Swing DJ’s (Including myself) still have in on their short list. And of course the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra is one Solid Big Band that’s adored by us all. Clearly this collaborative will Swing the House down! I’m certainly spreading the news about this fabulous night. for more info see - lincolncenter.org
