Sunday August 10, 2008 7:00 PM
Simone with The Rob Stoneback Big Band perform this Sunday at the Damrosch Park Bandshell in Lincoln Center. The daughter of the legendary musical icon Nina Simone, Simone is her own woman, a singer, songwriter and performer whose ability to transcend genres echoes the tradition of her mother. Blessed with a rich vocal range, an innate skill for lyrical interpretation and a soul-deep understanding of music as a means of healing, empowerment and celebration, Simone is very much her mother’s daughter, but she is most assuredly a multi-talented artist in her own right. With a fantastic career as a Broadway star (Aida, Rent, The Lion King) under her belt, she has now embarked on a solo singing career with a big band tribute to her mom on the CD Simone on Simone. Simone will backed by the Rob Stoneback Big Band, with charts based on her mother’s original arrangements. http://www.lincolncenter.org

Irene Reid Passes
Funeral Services:
Thursday January 10th, 2008
The Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church (127th and 8th Avenue)
Time: Viewing from 2-6:30 Services from 6:30 on at the church
Savannah, Georgia Native and long time Harlem resident Irene Reid has died. This soulful singer captivated audiences for decades including myself and thousands of dancers around the world. I had the great fortune of featuring her on June 8th 2003 when she sang for dancers at Nells in NYC. Those of you who were there that night witnessed a legendary voice and a personality that just rocked and made you smile, laugh and dance. All of us couldn't wait to have her return again and we tried several times during the years that followed. Unfortunately, her ailing health prevented her from doing so. Fortunate for us, Savant recorded 6 albums with her during the late 1990's and up to her final album recorded in 2004 and they all are fabulous and will help us to remember her and her unforgetable voice.
