More on Madeleine Peyroux:
"Musicians who go back to their roots are nothing new. But every once in a while, a new artist comes along and breathes new life into a genre. Newcomer Madeleine Peyroux is one of those artists. While musicians like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday are certainly not forgotten, there aren't many modern artists who do anything but covers that sound like, well, covers. Peyroux does the grand matriarchs true justice by singing like she's a contemporary rather than a mimic."
by Jon Steltenpohl REVIEW: Madeleine Peyroux, Dreamland (Atlantic)
"....her astounding voice -- capable of being both as powerful as a horn and as seductive as a quiet whisper -- is singular. It is her own. "
By Mary Jessica Hammes REVIEW: onlineathens.com
"...Of course the point of all this is " The Voice." When I first heard Madeleine's voice my jaw dropped. How could a 22-year old white girl sound like this? It's really eerie. She sounds so much like Billie Holiday that it's scary. Her voice is so mature, her phrasing is impeccable, it is a phenomenon and it must be heard to be believed...."

Irene Reid will give a very special concert for us dancers Sunday June 8th at NELLS. It will be a marvelous opportunity to see the genius behind those dance favorites like "Big Fat Daddy" and "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show". This 68-year-young Savannah, Georgia Native and long time Harlem resident has a story book history. At a young singer, Irene Reid aspired to appear on the greatest of stages in Black America, The Apollo. When she finally made it in the early 50's, she won the famed venue's amateur contest for "5 weeks in a row". From 1948 to 1950, she was the vocalist for Dick Vance, the big band at the famous Savoy Ballroom. She sang with Count Basie from 1961-62. Since then she went on to record 9 albums. She is a seasoned singer who has done it all! And now, after years off from performing live, Irene Reid is back.

"Like Esther Phillips, Etta Jones, Nancy Wilson and many others, she has extended the Dinah Washington legacy while adding her own individualistic nuances and personal touches to the mix..........."
Larry Hollis - Cadence Magazine

....an ensemble singer and a master of the vernacular capable of blending the mundane and the ethereal, using paraphrase, metaphor, and quotation so cleverly that she avoids sounding like just another singer covering standards......Reid's attitude about song selection is simple. " I try to pick songs that are happy. If I don't feel it, I don't do it. And I choose some because they're funny and truthful."
Don Palmer-Savant Records Inc.
